Immersive Media presents the technology behind Google StreetView.
Since the official launch of Google StreetView in the end of May, with five major cities of the US featured, the amount of talk around the blogosphere about it has been tremendous. And rightfully so. It’s an amazing endeavor by Google. Recently, four more cities have been included and it seems that it’s not going to stop there.
Of course that not everything is bright and this level of information has raised many questions about privacy and ethics and pushed Google to change the StreetView privacy policy.
Although the information about how Google is gathering the images for StreetView came out just days after the launch by the hands of Peter Shankman (the PR guy for Immersive Media, one of the companies taking care of it) I’m guessing that many of you still don’t know about it.
All that is needed is a 11 lens camera system (see photo above) and a guy to drive it around (I’m also guessing a huge amount of digital storage). The camera takes 30 frames per second of high resolution photography in eleven directions.
The Google Earth Blog managed to capture a part of the presentation at Where 2.0 when Immersive Media announced the technology. Here is the video.
