Big news for the Entertainment and Devices division of Microsoft: 1 million Zune players are on the streets.

Zune Player

According to Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices division of Microsoft, by the end of this fiscal year (June) the direct competitor to Apple's iPod, the Zune Player, will have sold more than 1 million units, meeting the goal set at launch.

And although 1 million units is still a very shy number compared to the 100 million iPods sold by Apple, it's already a fair base to start crunching some numbers and Bach talks about a 10% market share in the hard-disk-based category.

On the interview to the SFChronicle, Bach admits that 1 million is a "good start" but still does not reach the levels of sociability the company would have liked and thus "when your installed base is a million, the benefits of sharing, frankly, aren't as wide as we hope to see in the future."

As for future Zune products, Bach manages to evade the question, and rather talks generally about what Zune fans can expect: "There will be new things down the path (in the fall). We just came out with a special edition pink Zune and a watermelon-colored Zune, which are the personal favorites with my kids." Pink and Watermelon-colored??!? Well… ok… could be worse…
